How we operate

This is how we like to operate, and how we feel it is best to operate. We are not the police. We have tried to work out a fair and balanced view, and we are sure we have overlooked some viewpoints. That is why we ask you to tell us.

Our approach

We are trying to build the best platform available for everybody who uses it. It does not need to be expensive, and nobody here is paying for a life in the Maldives. We would rather be useful, fair and easy to deal with.

Fair for everyone

Providers, clients and our own staff all deserve to be treated with respect. Providers choose what they offer and what they charge. Clients are told what they are paying before they pay. Staff follow written steps, so two people with the same problem get the same answer.

Safety first

Every profile and every photograph is looked at by a person before it appears. Anyone can report something that worries them, and we would rather act too early than too late. If something may be illegal, we remove it first and look into it afterwards.

Honest money

Prices are shown in tokens, and you see the price before you buy. We do not hide charges in small print. If a fee exists, we say so in plain words.

How it works

Why we use XRP

We follow all UK law and legislation. Banks and card companies are often reluctant to process payments in this field, so we chose a payment method that does not depend on them.

XRP is a digital currency built for moving value quickly and cheaply. A payment settles in seconds and costs a tiny fraction of a card payment, which is how we keep our fees low and pass the saving to providers.

Bank money is created by central banks, and its value can be diluted over time. XRP has a fixed supply that was set when it was created, so nobody can print more of it. That does not make its price steady: like all crypto it goes up and down, and you can lose money.

Want to pay by debit card? No problem, and it is even quicker with XRP. Buy your XRP on an exchange you trust, then send it here. Choose one with a high degree of security and regulation: you are relying on that exchange's own security, not ours, and we never see your bank card details. Check that it is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority.

Discretion matters too. A card payment shows on your bank statement and in your banking app, with a merchant name and a description, and your bank sees where the money went. An XRP payment appears only as a transfer from one address to another, with no merchant name and nothing about what it was for. That is discretion, not anonymity: the exchange you buy from knows who you are, and the ledger itself is public.

Exchanges are regulated too. In the UK, an exchange that deals in crypto has to be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, check who its customers are and follow the money laundering rules, and that applies when you buy and when you cash out. XRP is not a way to hide income or avoid tax: you stay responsible for declaring what you receive. We use it because banks and card companies are often unwilling to work in this field, not to get round any rule.

We are not a bank or a financial adviser. Would you take out a mortgage from this website? Probably not, and you should not. We are a content platform. For financial advice or financial services, use a regulated firm. Crypto is not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and the Financial Ombudsman Service may not cover it.

Your privacy

We collect what we need to run your account and keep people safe, and no more. We never show how recently a member was last online beyond a rough idea, because nobody should be tracked just for logging in.

What we will not do

We will not pretend to be perfect, we will not punish someone for telling us we got it wrong, and we will not hide a decision from the person it affects. If we make a mistake we will say so and put it right.

Tell us what we missed

If you think we have overlooked something, or you simply disagree, we want to hear it. Write to us from the Contact menu and a person will read it.

Who runs this

TheDirectory.uk is run by a technology company. We build technology for UK businesses, and this site is where we put our best work to the test: a real platform, built to last, not an experiment.

Tiers, not tolls. Moving a postcode, availability, touring, lists and the rest all come inside a tier. There is no charge per feature, per day or per action, and providers are never penalised. The money comes from customers, fair and transparent.
